How to Build Resilience - The Perseverance Required in Freelancing

If you want to succeed as a freelance writer, you need passion and perseverance to overcome setbacks and disappointments. Whether you are dealing with the rejection of a client, a blown deadline, or a family emergency, it's important to stay resilient and not give up. Resilience is a skill that can be learned and strengthened, but it takes time and practice.

Whether you are an experienced freelancer or just starting out, there are many ways to build resilience and remain focused on the future. One of the best ways is to identify and use your own strengths, but it's also helpful to rely on supportive relationships. In addition, incorporating healthy stress relief practices like meditation, yoga, and exercise can help you cope with challenging situations.

While resiliency is usually thought of as an innate quality, research shows that it can be learned. It is a complex concept that involves traits, environmental factors, and the ability to use strategies and resources effectively. Using these tools can help you bounce back from difficult experiences and turn challenges into opportunities for growth.

The factors that contribute to resilience include emotional regulation, coping skills, and a sense of self-worth. People who are emotionally resilient can quickly recover from trauma and life-changing events, such as the death of a loved one or a severe illness. They are able to tap into realistic optimism, even during challenging times, and they are able to communicate openly with others to mobilize support.

Other qualities that can foster resiliency include the presence of protective factors and a sense of meaning in one's life. Protective factors are aspects of an environment that reduce risk and support health, such as community connections, a positive social network, a strong sense of purpose, and meaningful activities. A sense of meaning helps individuals cope with adversity and stress by providing a sense of direction and significance in their lives.

Resiliency is often seen as a male characteristic, but research shows that women also develop resilience when facing difficult circumstances. When they are surrounded by adversity, such as domestic violence, gender bias in the workplace, or mental health problems, women often use resilience to overcome these challenges. Women may draw on a variety of resilience-promoting factors, such as mentoring and intrinsic motivational factors, to work through challenges.

If you are interested in building resilience, there are a number of venues (such as classes, self-help books and coaching opportunities) that can provide the support and guidance you need to thrive. The key to developing resilience is finding a combination of strategies and supports that works for you and your clients. If you are having difficulty helping your clients to build their resilience, consider seeking the assistance of a qualified mental health professional.
